Santiago to León

Get to know the north of the country, the area by the Bay of Biscay that lies between steep mountains and green meadows, by beaches and cliffs, and discover the towns and villages of northern Spain. These are places full of enchantment and history that over the centuries have become living works of art, places like Santiago de Compostela, Vivero, Oviedo, Ribadesella, Llanes, Santillana del Mar, Santander, Bilbao, Carrión de los Condes and León. On board the train you will have the choice of double or single suites, where you will have all the privacy needed on any pleasure trip.

Detailed day by day information
Saturday
Departure from Santiago de Compostela Parador Nacional de Los Reyes Católicos, 12:00 noon Plaza del Obradoiro, 1

Santiago, the goal of pilgrims, is like a jewel in a crown, with the Plaza del Obradoiro, the Platerías, and the Cathedral. Lunch in Santiago. By coach from Santiago to Ferrol, where the train is waiting for us. Welcome and settling in. We will start our train trip by going to Viveiro, a lovely walled city. Visit. Dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Sunday
After breakfast, boat trip on the estuary. Then by train, trip from Viveiro to Ribadeo, on the border between Asturias and Galicia, visit. Lunch in Ribadeo. From there to Luarca, the White Village on the Green Coast. Dinner and overnight in Luarca.

Monday
The train heads in the direction of the capital of the Principality, Oviedo, in order to sample an incredible range of the most select gastronomy in a city that has a unique collection of Pre-Romanesque monuments. Then on to Gijón, the other important city in Asturias. Lunch in Oviedo. Dinner and overnight in Gijón

Tuesday
On our way to Arriondas, we reach the heart of Asturias: the Picos de Europa National Park, climb up to Lake Enol, the Sanctuary of Covadonga, and finally, Cangas de Onís. After lunch, back on the train and, following the route of the International Descent of the River Sella, we arrive in Ribadesella. From here, to Llanes, a marvellous fishing village in Eastern Asturias. Visit, dinner and overnight in Llanes.

Wednesday
While having breakfast, the train will take us to Cabezón de la Sal. From here we will take the coach to visit the New Cave of Altamira and Santillana del Mar. Lunch in Santillana. In the afternoon the train will take us to Santander. Visit and dinner. Later, those who wish to do so can visit the Casino. Overnight in Santander.

Thursday
After breakfast on the train, we will arrive in Bilbao, a modern city where the estuary meets the sea. Visit to the city and the Guggenheim Museum. Lunch on board the train. Visit of Torre de Loizaga in Galdames. Balmaseda. In the afternoon we will go to Villasana de Mena in the north of the province of Burgos. Dinner and overnight in Villasana de Mena.

Friday
In the morning we will go to Mataporquera, from where the coach will take us to visit the Canal de Castilla and some examples of the Palentine Romanesque art: Carrión de los Condes , Frómista and Villacázar de Sirga. Lunch in Villalcázar. Guardo, Roman villa. Visit of the Iron, Steel, Minig Industry Museum in Sabero. Then we will go by train to Cistierna. Dinner and overnight in Cistierna.

Saturday
On our last day, we will cross the pretty rivers and valleys of the mountains of León to the provincial capital, León. Visit to the city, which is full of history, St. Isidro, the Cathedral, Casa de Botines, Old Quarter and St. Mark’s.
