Fourteen years after British Columbia became Canada's sixth province, the Canadian Pacific Railway successfully linked Montreal with Vancouver . The pounding of the final steel spike on November 7, 1885 completed the ribbon of iron. The effort and sacrifices required were immense. Over 46,000 miles had been mapped and surveyed before the route was selected and construction began. Avalanche danger loomed overhead as the crews blasted tunnels, spanned rivers and capitalized on knowledge gained from railroad crews in the United States. The formidable challenges came not in the Fraser River Valley, but rather in the Canadian Rockies. The rugged and remote nature complicated matters and stretched the bank accounts of all involved. In spite of seemingly insurmountable odds, the project finished an astonishing six years ahead of schedule. It stands today as an amazing feat of determination and perseverance.

Shortly after the completion of the railway, the Imperial Limited began regular passenger service and pioneered an observation car with rooftop cupolas. These cars quickly gained popularity and through the years have been transformed into the world-renowned ultra domes. In the spirit of this historic service, RailsNW is offering an opportunity to retrace the Trans-Canada route. To view a full itinerary, click here or call 1-800-717-0108 for further details.

It's time to discover the Canadian Rockies. The tracks wind through majestic routes completely inaccessible by car. Relax in luxury as you explore the wonders of Banff and Jasper National Parks. Glide effortlessly over Rogers Pass and experience the famed Spiral Tunnel from the comfort of Rocky Mountaineer's Gold Leaf Dome.
